Why Is My Website So Slow? Here’s What to Check (Especially on Wix)

A slow website turns visitors away before they even see what you offer. It lowers sales, hurts your search rankings, and creates a bad first impression.
If you’re on Wix, you already have a solid foundation: a global CDN, automatic image optimization, and a built-in Site Speed dashboard with real user data. Still, I see many site owners unknowingly add things that cancel out those advantages.
Here’s where sites usually get bogged down — and how to fix it.
1. Overloaded Hero Section
Your header is the first thing people see, but often the slowest part of the site. Video backgrounds, massive images, and flashy animations all add seconds to load time.
Fix it: Keep your hero lean. Use a high-quality image under 1 MB instead of video. Save animations for later down the page.
2. Mobile Bloat
On smaller screens, heavy layouts are even more painful.
Fix it: In the Wix Mobile Editor, hide sections that don’t add value for phone users. Test your mobile load times after changes.
3. Galleries and Repeaters
Image-heavy sections like galleries can hit performance hard if everything loads at once.
Fix it: Stick to one gallery per page, turn on “Load More,” and use Wix’s image quality controls to keep things sharp but light.
4. Third-Party Apps and Scripts
This is a big one. External apps often slow down sites because they aren’t optimized for Wix’s system.
Fix it: Use Wix’s built-in apps wherever possible. They’re designed to work faster on the platform than outside tools. For example:
Use Wix Forms instead of Jotform or Wufoo.
Use Wix Bookings instead of Calendly embeds.
Use Wix Events instead of Eventbrite widgets.
Use Wix Chat instead of external live chat scripts.
Not only does this improve speed, but it also keeps everything managed from one dashboard.
5. Fonts and Styling Choices
Fonts add personality, but too many fonts add weight.
Fix it: Limit your site to one or two families, and avoid loading every possible weight. Stick to bold/regular for clarity.
My Approach
When I review a site, I don’t just look at scores from a testing tool. I ask:
What’s actually slowing your visitors down?
Are you using Wix’s optimized tools, or are third-party add-ons dragging performance?
What changes will make the biggest impact without a full rebuild?
Most times, the fastest path to improvement is swapping out one or two apps, trimming heavy visuals, and re-checking in the Wix Site Speed dashboard.
